Research/Policy Internships

NCCD Research/Policy Internship Program

Introduction

Located in Oakland, California, the National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD) is the nation’s oldest criminal justice research organization. Since 1907, NCCD has sought effective, fair, and economically sound solutions to social and criminal justice problems. NCCD uses a holistic approach of research, policy advocacy, and collaboration with individuals, public and private organizations, and the media to prevent and reduce crime and delinquency.

About the Internship Program

Some NCCD interns work on projects affiliated with the Center on Culture, Immigration, and Youth Violence Prevention. The Center's goal is to reduce youth violence, particularly among Asian/Pacific Islander (API) and Latino immigrant populations in Oakland, California. The Center aims to achieve this goal by convening community members, policymakers and researchers to identify community priorities regarding violence, conduct innovative research, and translate and disseminate information and knowledge into health and community practice. We are looking for motivated and passionate individuals who are interested in enhancing their research skills and expanding their knowledge of Oakland and its API and Latino immigrant communities.

Internships on other aspects of NCCD's work, including critical studies on youth and incarceration, are also available.

Intern duties may include:

  • Coding and analyzing data using SPSS and Excel
  • Creating and administering surveys
  • Summarizing library and internet research, and writing literature reviews
  • Interviewing program staff and youth for the pilot testing of a research study
  • Assisting with grant development, proposals, and reports as needed
  • Coordinating and attending meetings with staff, community partners, and policymakers
  • Staffing outreach events and/or making educational presentations

Interns must complete 120 hours per semester (10-20 hours/week) in order to receive a stipend of $500. Academic credit is unavailable.

Interns are based at NCCD’s office, located at 1970 Broadway, Suite 500 in downtown Oakland, near the 19th Street BART station and several AC Transit bus lines.
