Leaders Combat Trend of Youth Violence in Oakland's Chinatown

Oakland community leaders hosted a block party in the heart of the city’s Chinatown in hopes of bringing different ethnic groups together in fun rather than violence. They say the rate of violence in the Chinatown neighborhood is escalating, particularly between young Chinese Americans and recent immigrants from Mongolia.

Anti-Violence Summit Attracts Hundreds

Last Friday, when most of their friends were hanging out somewhere enjoying the Caesar Chavez holiday break from school, a group of mostly Latino Oakland middle school students were sitting in a classroom at Havenscourt Middle School, taking in lessons. The subject? Gang Awareness.
